Project Safe Flight History

A few of the birds killed by windows collisions during 2000
Since 1997 a small handful of volunteers has been monitoring New  York City buildings for migrating birds that have collided with windows.  One or sometimes two volunteers spend an hour or so walking by  building looking for dead or injured birds. Dispite spotty coverage, we  have found thousands of birds that were either dead or in need of help.

Birds found dead and injured at selected buildings in New York City, 1997-Spring 2001

Birds found dead or injured at New York City buildings, 1997-Spring 2001, by location

We would like to better understand this problem, with a eye to minimizing the loss of wildlife each migration season. Just a few hours a week will make a big difference. Monitor a building on your way to work. Rescue casualties. Educate friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Become a part of our effort today!
