Dear PSF volunteers, Although weather conditions have been very variable, these past two weeks offered some amazing birding days with a lot of species recorded around town. We are still expecting to receive large waves of migrants so let’s stay alert because collisions will continue to occur and maybe even intensify. In this week’s update, I will present:
1. Numbers from the field So far this season, PSF volunteers have recovered 76 birds from 27 different species, with 83% of birds found dead (63 birds). Of the 13 injured birds, seven were brought to a rehabilitator. The following graph indicates where birds were found, emphasizing the problem we still face at Morgan Mail. The next graph is a first estimate of our top five species for this season. 2. Help needed for Lights Out NY Lights Out NY was launched in the beginning of April to help migratory birds fly safely through our city. We are looking for volunteers who could stay up and look at the skyline from 11.30pm to 1 am in order to document the buildings that don’t turn off their lights. This can be done any day and is a one time deal. Please contact me if you want to help with this project. 3. Help needed for PSF data entry As mentioned in a previous update, we are in the midst of transferring all our archived data to our online database. Elizabeth White is doing a great job but there are over two years of bird collision data and she cold use an extra hand. This work can also be done from home as long as you have an internet connection. Please contact me if you can invest a few hours a week in this project. 4.
