  Van Cordlandt Park
1146 hilly acres in the northwest Bronx, more than half of which is deciduous forest, scrubland, meadows, ridges, wetlands, brooks, and a man-made lake, providing avian habitat. A total of 177 species has been recorded since 1970, and at least 50 breed here.

The 1.5 mile John Muir Trail starts near Nursery Gate near Van Cortlandt Park East and Katonah Avenue. Main areas are the Northeast Woods, Croton Woods, Northwest Forest, and the Southwest Zone. You may obtain a trail map at the Urban Forest Ecology Center east of Broadway at West 246th Street on the south end of the Parade Ground.

Directions:
Bus: Manhattan Express bus BxM3 to 244th Street and Broadway or to Mosholu Parkway. Call Liberty Lines (718) 652-8400 for information.

Subway/Bus: From Manhattan to Northeast Forest, Bronx bound #4 subway to Woodlawn (last stop), then Bx34 from Bainbridge Avenue to Katonah Avenue and East 242nd Street.

Or, take Bronx-bound #1 or #9 subway to Van Cortlandt Park / 242nd Street (last stop). The Parade Ground is just north of this stop, or you may take the Bx9 bus to Mosholu Avenue (riding stables) for the Northeast Forest.
