Volunteer Opportunities
NYC Audubon has a wide range of volunteer opportunities available. No experience is required; we will provide all necessary training for field work (except as noted). If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, contact the office at volunteer@nycaudubon.org or 212-691-7483.
All orientations and trainings are held at the NYC Audubon office unless otherwise noted. If two dates are listed for an orientation, you only need to attend one.
TogetherGreen Volunteer Day: Clove Lake Park
Saturday, May 22, 10am - 2pm
Meet at Slosson Avenue and Drake Street. Join us in Clove Lake Park in Staten Island to help forest restoration in the park by planting trees, shrubs and woody plants beneath the canopy. For program flyer click here.
Transportation from Manhattan available, advance registration is required.
RSVP: Leslie Chase, phone 212-691-7483.

Office Volunteers
Working in our busy and friendly office, you will know you are making a difference for the city’s wildlife! As migration approaches, office volunteers become even more important in keeping up with answering inquiries about wild birds and our organization. Learn how to use NYC Audubon’s library and resources to answer questions about wildlife, familiarize yourself with our trips and classes, and learn how to use our streamlined and simple registration system.
Outreach Volunteers
Orientation: Wednesday, March 24, 6-7pm
NYC Audubon’s Eco-Adventures take participants to the green spaces throughout the five boroughs and beyond. Volunteers are needed to attend trips, distribute information, sign up new members, and talk about our activities and initiatives. Orientation will help you learn more about our programs as well as best practices in outreach communication.
Project Safe Flight
Orientation: Friday, March 19, 6-7pm
Thousands of songbirds migrate through our city from southern wintering grounds back to northern nesting grounds. We need caring and compassionate individuals to rescue stunned and injured birds that have collided with glass buildings during the spring and fall migrations. Orientation will demonstrate how to collect collision data to help our researchers, and how to handle injured birds.
Jamaica Bay Monitoring
Orientation: Tuesday, March 23, 6-7pm or Wednesday, March 31, 6-7pm
NYC Audubon is engaged in an ongoing project to restore horseshoe crab spawning beaches at Jamaica Bay and monitor the effects on both horseshoe crabs and the shorebirds that depend on crab eggs to fuel their migratory journey. We need volunteers from April through September to survey beaches for crabs and birds, and to help with beach cleanup and restoration activities. Orientation will teach monitoring techniques and how to collect accurate data.

Harbor Herons Nesting Survey
Orientation: Wednesday, April 21, 5-7:30pm or Saturday, April 24, 12-2:30pm
We need volunteers to participate in nesting surveys for Harbor Herons, double-crested cormorants, and gulls. Volunteers should be experienced in wading bird identification and data recording, and tolerant of tough working conditions (including hot and cold weather, rough boat rides, poison ivy, ticks, thorns, and the like) for 6-8 hours at a time. Orientation will help volunteers hone their citizen science skills by introducing behavioral ecology and field observation techniques.
Harbor Herons Foraging Study
Orientation: Wednesday, April 21, 5-7:30pm or Saturday, April 24, 12-2:30pm
Volunteers for this new project will undertake a land-based study of Harbor Heron foraging behavior. We will train you in behavioral ecology field techniques to observe herons as they spend time away from the breeding colony, resting and foraging for food to feed their young. This study will start in April and continue through the summer. Orientation will help volunteers hone their citizen science skills by introducing behavioral ecology and field observation techniques.
