Volunteer!
We are looking for volunteers to collect the data that we will compile into a comprehensive account of bird nesting territories in Central Park. You will be part of a small team responsible for walking a specific section of the park each week (see the link to the map of sections in the menu on the left) and recording all the birds you observe, their locations, and their behaviors (singing, carrying nesting material, the presence of young or fledglings, etc.). The study will run for 8 weeks, from May 24th to July 18th, but since you will be part of a team, you don't need to worry if you'll be out of town or otherwise unavailable for part of the time. You will need to be available in the early mornings (ideally starting about 30 minutes after sunrise) for long enough to cover your entire territory (approximately 2 hours, though it will vary depending on the specific section). We are especially looking for experienced birders who can readily identify the major bird species likely to nest in Central Park both by sight and by song, but all birders are welcome to contribute and learn! If you are interested in helping with the census, please contact Jill Crouther for more details. Please include a note about your level of birding expertise and areas of the park you're most interested in censusing, if applicable. We will provide you with data collection sheets and instructions as well as a reference CD of bird songs. You will need to provide your own binoculars and field guide. Thank you for your interest! |
