NYC Audubon is working to protect wild birds in Brooklyn, whether they are residents or just passing through.

With the help of members like you, in 2009 alone we:

  • Conducted a breeding bird census in Prospect Park.
  • Planted trees at Floyd Bennett Field through the Audubon/Toyota TogetherGreen initiative.
  • Cleaned Plumb Beach and Brighton Beach so that horseshoe crabs can spawn, laying millions of eggs to feed shorebirds migrating from South America to the Arctic.
  • Monitored shorebird and horseshoe crab numbers and behavior at Plumb Beach and nearby Jamaica Bay, gathering data to help us determine the effectiveness of our conservation efforts.
  • Educated the public about Jamaica Bay’s importance as a bird habitat through a bus shelter campaign in Brooklyn and Queens.
  • Held education programs for students at Sheepshead Bay High School and IS 318, Williamsburg Studied foraging harbor herons at Drier-Offerman Park, Gerritson Beach, and Spring Creek.
  • Erected a chimney swift tower in East River State Park (in cooperation with New York State Parks, National Audubon, and Audubon New York).

That’s a long list—and that’s just in Brooklyn!

Each year our conservation and education initiatives reach out to more than 20,000 New Yorkers in all five boroughs. Now we are reaching out to you. As a member of NYC Audubon, you know we cannot carry out our work alone. We rely on partner organizations, committed volunteers, and dedicated donors like you.

NYC Audubon's projects in Brooklyn are a collaborative effort with numerous non-profit organizations and government agencies including the American Littoral Society, Brooklyn Bird Club, Jamaica Bay Eco Watchers, NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, NYC Department of Environmental Protection, NY State Department of Environmental Conservation, the National Park Service, and the Prospect Park Alliance. NYC Audubon's conservation and education programs in Jamaica Bay are made possible by the support of NYC Audubon's members and individual contributors as well as National Audubon's TogetherGreen, funded by Toyota, the Leon Levy Foundation, and the Bodman Foundation.
