Photographing Birds in Southwest Florida:
Sanibel Island, Fort Meyers Beach, Corkscrew Swamp
March 17-21 2010
with David Speiser

Explore Southwest Florida's birds with our photography trip focusing on the Sanibel Island and Fort Myers Beach Area. Florida presents some of the best bird photography opportunities, and is the perfect place for both inexperienced and experienced nature photographers to hone their skills. We will focus our photography efforts on waders and shorebirds. Since we will be travelling in mid-March we look for migrating Passerines as well. With side trips to photograph Burrowing Owls and the opportunity to walk the boardwalks of Corkscrew as well. There may also be the opportunity to look for bald eagle and osprey nests nearby.

We will be spending most of our days in the field, where field camera techniques will be discussed and practiced. We will focus on how to approach birds, proper camera technique, exposure, flash photography and more. In the evenings we will review our days pictures and try to see what went right and what went wrong. In the afternoons, when we’re not in the field, our hotel is on the beach and you can relax in the Gulf, swimming pool or walk the beach and attempt to take some photographs of pelicans, shorebirds, gulls and terns.

Equipment required: SLR, telephoto lens, at least 300mm, tripod. A good spirit and a willingness to learn.
