Steve Nanz
In 1997, Steve Nanz, a Brooklyn native and avid birder, thought he'd try photographing some of the birds he'd been seeing in Prospect Park, a city park near his home. He dusted off the Pentax ME Super his mom bought him for college seventeen years earlier. It broke after the second roll of film, and the photos showed nothing more than blurry dots. Undaunted, he downgraded to a Pentax K1000 but did get a bigger lens. The dots were now bigger and a lot less blurry.

Three years later he was shooting any bug, bird or fungus he could find with a Nikon 400mm f2.8 lens mounted on an Nikon F3 camera body. Despite it's apparent concrete exterior, he found his Brooklyn home to be rich with life.
He is currently working with a Canon 400mm f2.8 image stabilized lens with 2x converter and a 10D digital camera body for bird photography. For insects he switches to a 100-400mm f5.6 zoom with extension tubes and a Canon Twin Lite flash unit.

In 1989 Steve founded Nanz Custom Hardware,Inc., a manufacturer of high end decorative architectural metal work. Although he still oversees production at Nanz Hardware, he makes time to lead nature walk and to pursue his love of photography.

His photos have appeared in many of New York's nature conservation related publications and websites such as New York City Audubon, National Audubon, and The Prospect Park Alliance. He has given slide show presentations for the Brooklyn Bird Club as well as the Linnaean Society of New York. He also leads field trips for the Brooklyn Bird Club and New York City Audubon.
