NESTING WATERBIRDS OF NICKERSON BEACH, LI
Black Skimmers in flight© David Speiser
Saturday, June 29, 6-9am
Instructor: David Speiser
Meet at the south end of the Nickerson Beach parking lot for this workshop getting close up and personal with breeding birds on their colonies. We'll have access to black skimmers, common terns, American oystercatchers, least terns, and piping plovers--in addition to a potential four gull species (plus a possible gull-billed tern). Hoping to take advantage of this rare opportunity to photograph some of these species with their young, we'll learn how to approach colonies for a successful shoot--and focus on exposure, flight shot technique, and composition, as well as proper etiquette when shooting in sensitive bird areas. As always, there will be time for lively discussion about photographic equipment, travel, and processing software. Recommended equipment: DSLR, 300 mm lens + and tripod; knee pads are a good idea as well. Limited to 8. $75
